Former industrial sites, gas stations, dry cleaners, junkyards, mining-related sites, and landfills: what can your Colorado community do to cleanup and reuse these properties?
Getting Redevelopment Done aired as the first webinar in our Colorado Brownfields Partnership series. The Colorado Brownfields Program provides public and private property owners with resources to address environmental obstacles to site reuse for downtown properties, industrial facilities, long-forgotten gas stations, and other potentially contaminated properties that would otherwise languish and hinder economic development.
Our panelists, Doug Jamison, Alissa Schultz and Fonda Apostolopoulos, explained how to access CDPHE’s Brownfields Program, the nuts and bolts of how the program works, and its importance in facilitating redevelopment projects.
Doug provided a brief regulatory and legal history of why environmental problems present issues for site reuse, the role of the state brownfields program, how the brownfields program addresses each step of the process, and program activity around the state.
Alissa gave an overview of the state’s assessment assistance, including what targeted brownfields assistance provides, how your community can submit an application to the program, services received, and importance to the property owner or buyer. Fonda then detailed what the voluntary cleanup program provides, its benefits, and the steps entailed to use the program.
Finally Doug went over current funding and resources for brownfields cleanup at the state level, including the revolving loan fund, 1306 grant and tax credits. This included a process example: describing how a particular property goes through the state’s programs from start to finish.
The webinar concluded with question & answer period.
